  1. Hey guys. I hate to be the grammar dick (that’s not true), but I must explain the difference between acronyms and initialisms. An initialism is a combination of letters which represent words, i. e. DNA for deoxyribonucleic acid, or USA for, well, you get it. An acronym is a combination of letters that represent words but are pronounced as words. examples are NATO, for north atlantic treaty organization, or SCUBA for self-contained breathing apparatus. One is pronounced as it’s own word, and one is just a series of letters.

    To review, HIV is an initialism, and AIDS is an acronym.
